Lock help

Question
Hi,

I'm brand new to the sport of rugby and I joined my college rugby club. I
know very little from my trip to Australia last summer. The people that took
care of me told me I'd be a good lock. And that's what I'm now playing on my
team.

I'm 6'0 feet tall and 200 lbs(183cm and 91 kg). I'm one of the tallest on my
team. And being that I'm from the U.S.A. my team doesn't have a coach. So I'd
like help on drills and what exactly my role on the field is. I've been looking
on the internet but I'd think I'd get a better answer here.

Thanks

Answer
Hi Andrew,

I always suggest the book "rugby for dummies" also there are some great websites with rugby drills, some even have illustrations.

Read through my old questions - the subject heading usually indicate the content of the answers, especially the answers on scrum/prop and tackling.

In a lot of my answers I have provided useful links, I suggest using those too.

Let me know in a follow up question which area of the USA you are in and I might be able to assist with a coach of some kind via the Rugby "network". FYI: rugby is almost better than gold for contacts.

Get as much rugby as you can on TV, read all you can about rugby and study the game. Get social games of touch going whenever you can in the off season. See if there is a local mens rugby club you can get your college team affiliated with, they might assist in coaching in the hope your team feeds their mens club team.
