Hey Tony, I am 16, 158 pounds, 6'2, well built, can run fairly well, and have played rugby for a few years now. This year I starting to play for a new school team and my coach and I are wondering what position I should play. In club rugby I have generally kept to the forwards, as a flank, second row, or even prop at times. My coach has suggested playing as a "9"; and I am not too sure what that is (please elaborate). I am open to playing as a back, but previous coaches have used my height and my light weight as an advantage as a jumper in line outs; in which I have done very well in. So if you had any suggestions that would be great.  Secondly I have found while playing, I am faced up with huge guys; would you have any tips or moves I can try, in how I can get around these guys when I have position, and how to take them down when I don't.

Hi Rob,

Sorry about the delay in getting back to you. Yep try the 9 position, in the past the 9 player was generally smaller, but these days size is not a factor. The role of the 9 is important, he is the link between the forwards and the backs, he is  the eyes of the attack, so he is always looking at the flow of the game and trying to find a way to exploit the opposition. He must be quick and must also be a fast passer of the ball. He should be able to support runners and secure the ball, but his main role is distribution of the ball to the backs. Communication between 9 & 10 is very important. He should be fast of the mark and be able to cover his opposite number. He is also responsible for calling his forwards and telling them to stay away. He is like a little general.

As for taking big guys in tackles, the easiest way is to cut down their momentum, that means moving up on them as soon as them move and tackling them low. Make sure you look at their gut or legs and position your self to make the tackle. remember the tackle lasts for less  then a second.

Try anything to upset their rhythm but getting in their face all the time and you mentally beat them
