Question
My sixteen yr son play's hooker. How often should we replace his scrum hat.
With Thanks.

Answer
In my opinion it should be replaced when it no longer fits or if the strap no longer works. As a safety item it is really only going to stop cuts and maybe surface bruises. Head gear is not proven to stop concussion - a mouth guard does a better job of that.

That said there is nothing wrong with using head gear in rugby but like ay gear if it is too worn out to do it's intended purpose then replace it.

Also if it starts to stick too much even after washing - chuck it and get a new one, no one needs that!
