What positon should I play?

Question
Hello. I'm a 21 year old female from Canada. I've never played rugby before but I'm thinking of trying it out because I've always been really interested in it. I'm just wondering what position would suit me the best. I'm not an extremely muscular girl, but I have played hockey my whole life and some football (just so fun) so I'm quite physical. I'm pretty tall for a girl.. 5'10 and but I'm only 138 lbs. Like I said, not overly muscular but I can be very physical and I'm a great tackler. I'm a fast runner but I know there would be faster girls. I just want an idea of what would be a good positon so I could do some more research.

Answer
Hi Amanda,

I could go on for ever about what position a person should play. I could base it on size, build, speed, strength or even "x-factor" the reality is I would be highly inaccurate either way as I can't actually see you or see you play.

That said I suggest going to a practice with a team with no preconceived ideas. Practice with the forwards and backs and look at all the positions to see what you might like. Learn as much about the game as a whole by reading the rules, books (Rugby for Dummies is great for beginners) and go from there. A coach will also have an influence.

Keep in mind that it may take a season or two or more to settle on a position you like and then it may take longer to really master it.

Focus on learning and having fun for now.
