Question
Hi, i had played rugby league regularly for 4 years up until about 3 years ago, when i had to give it up to move house.  I have now decided that i am going to take up rugby union, with no previous history of playing or following the sport.

I used to play on the wing when i played league and have been told by my local union side that i can get a place playing on the wing for them.  is there any tips that you can give me to help with the change and are there any considerable differences between the position in the two different sports?

Answer
The biggest difference is time. In rugby league you would have more time with the ball in hand and more pressure on defense on a consistent basis. In union you are lucky to maybe get the ball more than 10 times.

RL is man on man and union is pack based, SO how do you approach the game? watch what your opposition does. maybe shadow him for awhile. Which the lines he takes etc. in defence, Union doesn't usually have a line defence as the ball can be kicked over, so you will need to drop back from your line and watch for the kick. On attack....watch your team and the way your attacking. Look to get involved in the game, talk to your inside players.

Apart from that, Union is pretty similar...its the stop and go action that confuses the league players.

Does that help?
