What Rugby Position Should I Play?

Question
QUESTION: Hey,

I was just wondering what position should I play. I'm 16 years old and I'm going to play for a under 18 side (club). I'm 169 pounds (77gs) and 187cm tall. I used to play for under 16 at openside lock, but I wanted to play in the back because I'm a bit too light for the Fowards. I'm in pretty good shape with only 9.5% body fat because I Boxed for like a year now. I can run 50 metres in 6.23 seconds and I have a pretty good aerobic and anerobic fitness. Pretty good attributes, and I forgot to tell you that I played in the backs Fullback and Wing until I got a bit chubby, but now I'm in good shape.

Thank You

ANSWER: Have you thought about playing in open or blindside flank (6 or 7)this position is an extension of the backs, maybe even consider the 8 position. I mention these positions because a boy of your hight and size and speed may excel in this specialist position. Speed from the scrum and putting pressure on the number 9 or 10 is a good skill to have.
I have as a coach rotated my wingers through the flank position (in the under 18 grades) has worked really well. Maybe try the open side position for a few games and focus on the number 9 and 10 and try to disrupt the play...if you can do this you have stopped a complete team from attacking. let me know what you decide.

QUESTION: Ohh Yeah, I've tried that position a couple of times but they require more strength than power because I'm  more of a explosive power player but I'm a bit unstable with the strength side. I also can take a pretty good hit so I'm alright with the composure part and I'm also pretty good at attacking more than defence.

thank u for answering my questions.:)

Answer
Don't worry about the strength and power aspect of that position..yes it is important..but the speed that you have and the explosive power is more important. remember your opposition cant run or pas if you in his face. if the person your marking is bigger and he attacks you, double team him with your number 8 or a quick word to your number 9 may help. you don't need a lot of strength to defend..When you tackle a big guy, aim for his ankles don't try to tackle high. Practice a low attack, you speed will upset and big guy and you only have to do it a few times and he will get weary of you. Don't put up barriers for your position ie: not strong enough etc.....use what you have to win in any position.
