Fair or Foul Ball

Question
The ball is hit high into the air and lands fair between home plate and third base.  The ball is not touched by anyone.  The spin on the ball causes it to bounce foul, but still between home plate and third base.  The ball is now over foul territory, but has not hit the ground a second time, yet.  The fielder, who is standing in fair territory, grabs the ball off the first bounce while it is in the air over foul territory.  Is it now a foul ball?  Does it matter whether the fielder is standing in foul or fair territory?  Thanks!

Answer
Wayne,

This is a common question here and how to rule this causes much more confusion than it should.

In judging whether the ball is foul or fair it doesn't matter where the fielder is standing.  All that matters is the position of the ball.  If it is on or over foul territory when first touched by a player or piece of equipment on the field, foul ball.  On or over fair territory when first touchedd, fair ball.  It also doesn't matter where the ball last touched the ground prior to being touched by a fielder.

There is nothing more to it than that.

Tom
