Softball Infield Fly Rule & Runner Interference: Understanding the Outs

Question
bases loaded 1 out, ball hit infield, girl fielding the ball ran into the runner going from 2nd, she dropped ball. How many outs 1 or 2?

Answer
Hi Marilyn,

Thank you for your question.  Two outs!  The out on the batter who hit the infield fly is a live ball out, so we play on, just as we play on after other live ball outs, such as when one runner passes another, or when a runner is assisted by a base coach.  The runner interference results in a dead ball and the runner who was on 2B is out, too.
