Force plays and standing on base

Question
Hi Mark,

Here's an interesting situation that came up the other day.
No outs, runners on 1st and 2nd.  Ball is hit sharply to SS who is playing close to 2nd base.  He tags R1 who is still in contact with 2nd base and then tags the base as R1 then runs to 3rd.  Is R1 out on the tag?
Also, what would have happened if SS tagged the base first and then R1 while R1 was still on 2nd?  This latter case seems like the force to 3rd is removed when tagging 2nd base and forcing out R2.  The actual play, which is the first case, is less clear cut to me.

Thanks again!

Mike

Answer
Hi Mike,

R1 no longer can legally occupy 2nd,  on base or not, when tagged they are out, step on 2nd for the double play, throw to 1st for a triple play.

If F6 touched 2nd base 1st the force is now removed from R1 who can only be out if legally tagged while off base.

your welcome,

Mark
