Baseball Rule: Tagging Up After a Fumbled Catch - Correct Ruling

Question
I had a league game tonight. I was on 2nd base with 1 out.
Batter hit the ball to RC and RC fielder caught the ball
initially, I tagged up and ran to third, the RC fielder
unintentionally bobbled the ball and regained possession
before it hit the ground. I was called out because I didnt
go back and tag up after he caught it for the second time. I
argued that I made a legal tag up before he bobbled it but
the umpires still called me out. What is the correct ruling
on this. I would like to get official documentation on this
ruling for a protest, it essentially lost us the game. Thank
you for your help.

Answer
Hi Stuart,

you made a legal tag and will win your protest as a runner can leave the base as soon as a ball in flight that is going to be caught 1st touches any defensive player  ASA 8-4-b

I have used in the past R1 on 2nd and a high sharp line drive deflects off the glove of a leaping 6'8" F6 and carries into LC where F8 catches the ball for an out.  R1 can legally leave the base as soon as F6 touched the ball.
