Question
My daughter plays 10u,during a timeout the opposing 3rd base coach called over the base runner from 2nd base to talk to her, when play resumed the runner stayed at 3rd base my daughters manager recognized it and called time after a pitch had been thrown. The umpire called time and sent the runner back to her original base. should she have been called out

Answer
Hi Rob,

this is actually a very good question and different umpires might handle it differently.  You might see some add to the answer on this one.

This should have been prevented by "preventative umpiring" and before play began, put the runner back

If in my opinion (and I'm not sure how I would come to it) and I didn't think this was an obvious case of cheating, based on the level of play I can see the umpire doing what they did.  I wouldn't do it but it's a simple solution.

if you ignore the level you can argue for a number of possibilities.

1) you could have usc, eject the runner, place a sub on 2nd (least likely I believe)
2)call the runner out based on 8-7-s where the runner fails to keep contact to the base the runner is entitled until the ball leaves the pitcher's hand.
3)#2 and eject the runner for usc
4) with #1, #2 and #3 you could also eject the 3rd base coach for usc 10-1-j-3

The simplest and I believe correct is #2 and I might couple it w/ #4
