Softball Play Analysis: Strategic Outs & Base Running

Question
QUESTION: It's the first inning.  R1 is on third base and R3 is on first base with 1 out.  BR 4 hits a pop up behind F6. F6 catches it, for out number 2. Meanwhile, R3 thinking the ball would not be caught was  to far off 1st base and tries to return to first in time.  F6 turns and throws to first before she is able to return, for the third out.  R1 upon the catch by F6, tagged up and was able to touch home before the first baseman caught F6's throw for the third out.  Does the run count?  Thanks!

ANSWER: Hi Steve,

Yes the run would count, this is a timing play and not a force out

QUESTION: R1 is on third base.  BR2 hits a line drive down third. R1 is standing right on top of the base (not standing on the foul side of the base touching the bag with the side of  her foot. The ball bounces and then hits her while on the bag. She's on the bag, so she's not out, but is it a live ball still and play goes on or is it dead?

Answer
Hi Steve,

thank you for the kind eval.

You are correct in ASA a runner hit w/ a fair batted ball while on the base would not be out, unless they intentionally interfere w/ the ball.

1 of 2 things can now happen...

If the closest defensive player is in front of 3rd base the ball is live and we play on.

If the closest defensive player is behind 3rd base, the ball is dead, the b-r is awarded 1st base and any other runners advance only if forced.
