third strike -- bounced before reaching plate

Question
With two strikes, one out, and a runner on third base, a pitch hits the ground before reaching the plate, but the batter swings.  The catcher catches it after the swing, but the ball has already hit the ground before the swing.  The batter runs to first base, the catcher does not throw to first base.

Is it considered a "dropped" third strike because it hit the ground prior to the swing?

Thanks very much!

Answer
Hi Carol,

the problem with the dropped 3rd strike rule is it's title.  People think the catcher has to drop the ball.

The rule actually says "when the catcher fails to catch the 3rd strike before the ball touches the ground"

Is it considered a "dropped" third strike because it hit the ground prior to the swing? Yes it is, and if the catcher secures the ball it is considered a trap.
