QUESTION: Hi!
My name is Kristen and I play softball of a high school in Missouri. I am a good batter, and once I get used to a position I play very good, but I have been moved from outfield to infield and it is a hard transition for me. I am a senior and I am wanting to play college softball, but I have a dilemma. I haven't played but two years in high school and that is just during the spring, which isn't as competitive as the Fall ball, but I really love softball and really want to play ball in college, but I am about 5'1 and I weigh 230 pounds. I do everything that I can to lose weight, a lot of it is muscle, but a lot of it is fat too. Obesity runs in my family and I am in track also, I throw shot and disc and I just can't seem to lose the weight and I feel that if I don't that I will never get a good chance of playing college ball. This is a very disappointing factor for me because of how much I love playing ball. My coach and I don't talk much, except during season, but I just don't know what to do! I feel like I am someone trapped inside my body and I can't do anything about it, though I try time and time again. I can exercise all the time and still not lose much weight! I don't know what to do! If you could please give me some advise I would really appreciate it.

ANSWER: Kristen, If you want to play ball on the college level, you will need to devote as much time possible practicing and working out. My girls play ball all year round, spring, summer and even winter. When they are not actually playing they are preparing to play. College ball is a completely different world and there is plenty of competition for scholarships. Don't let your size effect your attitude and simply keep working.Work hard!! Remember, when your not practicing, someone else is. Good luck!!

QUESTION: Thanks! Also I work better when I am told to do something specific, so do you have any ideas as to what I could do to work harder, as in running, practicing, or anything else?

You mentioned that you were moved into the infield. If you not familiar with the position try to learn as much as you can mentally ( where to be in various situations, fielding fundamentals, so on). Players can never run enough, this will help your endurance. My best advice for you, is to work on what "you" think your biggest weakness is.Pinpoint this area and improve as much as you can, when you've done this, pick something else and work till your happy with that.Always make small goals and work hard until you've achieved it, then simply pick another goal and start again. This will not only help you with softball but will carry over into your adult life as well. Let me know if I can help you in the future.
