Umpire Call: Was it a Correct 'Crash' Call in Summer League?
Question
In 10u summer league, a umpire called Crashing as R1 and F4 trying to catch the ball from the catcher on a steal. R1 did not slide. Both players fell to the ground and F4 lost control of the ball and R1 touches 2nd with her hand. Correct call or just a wreck?
Answer
I don't know about the terminology (crashing), but I would agree with the call. A runner is never required to slide, but is obligated to avoid a fielder making a play on a batted ball. If the catchers throw pulled the defensive player up the line and into the runners path, she had no way of knowing a collision was about to happen. The only possible call here could be runner interference if she intentionally ran into the fielder. If not, then you have a no call and a "wreck" as you put it.
