on base positioning

Question
hello, my daughter,8, tries to mimic the local varsity team. She stands on the bases just like they do. Why do they stand on the outfield side and/or in foulish territory until the release. Is it because they can't lead and want to start during the wind-up and leave on the release? and what do I tell a coach that tries to "correct" her by telling her to stand differently?

Answer
Hello Tim,

That is the exact reason why this method is used.  I personally teach this style of baserunning, but some coaches teach them to stay inside the bases when initiating the run.  I'd discuss this with the Coach in private and inform him that this is a common practice for the varsity team and you feel it would better serve her to learn now the style that is taught in high school.  If he still wants your daughter to do it his way, it isn't a big adjustment for her to change later.  The main thing is to approach him in private and don't be demanding.  He is volunteering his time to Coach your daughter and should be commended for this.  I hope this helps and please let me know how the meeting goes.

Coach Mike
