scoring a hit

Question
When a ball is hit hard up the middle and is deflected by the pitcher, does this count as a hit to the batter if the batter reaches first base.  It has always been my understanding that unless it was a blatant error by the pitcher, a fieldable ball, it would be counted as a hit and not an error to the pitcher.
Thanks

Answer
Hello Pam

Yes you are correct. I would score that a hit. No error is charged when a ball is misplayed that was hit so hard more than ordinary effort is needed to play the ball.

Consider the distance of the mound from the plate and what the pitcher's primary duty is. If the pitcher mishandles or deflected a sharply batted ball, do not charge them with an error. You may charge a pitcher with an error on a mishandled slow roller, bunt, or wild throw.

As an scorer always ask yourself, "Does the fielder deserve an error?" When answering always give benefit of the doubt to the hitter.
