Understanding Continuous Play in Youth Softball: A Detailed Explanation

Question
Hello Dr. Ambrose

My daughter plays U8- softball. My question has to do with the definition of 'continuos play'. The pitcher had 8 outs in the beginning of the play- we had a runner on first and no outs. The batter grounds out at first and the first baseman throws the ball to the pitcher in the circle- runner on second advances to third the pitcher throws the ball and tags her out at third. In our league the pitcher is allowed only 9 outs per game. The rule book states that 'No game will be forfeited because of excess pitching outs which occur as the result of outs made during a continuous play which began with the pitcher having less than the specified number of outs in that game.'
question- definition of continuos play?- How many outs should the pitcher recieve for this play- was
it a continuous play?

Answer
Hi Kimberly,

In ASA we don't have a U8.  We do have a GU10 but no rule such as you mentioned so it's either another organization or a local league rule.

This sounds like a continous play to me.  Your softball exec. should be able to answer your questions
