SP softball umpire positioning

2016/7/15 16:40:29

Question
In a 2 man crew what is the best positioning for the base ump in the various situations?  eg...runner on 1st, 1st & 2nd, etc...

Answer
Hi Jay,

we umpire with the inside/outside theory,  BU stay outside if the ball is in the infield and move inside if the ball goes outside the diamond.  This is critical to keeping all 4 elements in front of the umpire.  We button hook inside the diamond on balls hit to the outfield

With nobody on, 1st only, 3rd only or 1st and 3rd, the BU if possible should be off F4's left shoulder and slightly behind

2nd only, 1st and 2nd, 2nd and 3rd or bases loaded, if possible the BU should be off f4's right shoulder and slightly behind.

Of course the BU needs to be able to modify those positions depending on the infield defensive setup.
