Runner hit by thrown ball while on base

2016/7/15 16:41:12

Question
Last night while playing a slow pitch softball game using ASA rules minus the pitch arc limit we had an unfortunate situation where a ball was hit up the middle and our shortstop fielded the ball and went to throw to first and hit the runner standing on second in the side of the head. From my view point in left field it appeared the short stop was past second before he threw and it didn't appear that the runner did anything to get in or out of the way of the throw, just wrong time wrong place. Is this interference and the batter is out or would the batter-runner be safe at first as well as the guy at second. The situation was just 1 runner who was on second when the batter hit the ball.

Thanks for any help.

Answer
Hi Jon,

This would never be interference unless the runner intentionally interfered with the throw (either on or off base).  A few softball players aren't exactly neurosurgeons but I've never seen one to use their head intentionally to stop a throw.

This is simply a bad throw by F6, the ball is live and we play on.  If the umpire determined R1 needed immediate attention, we have "time" and then will award the runners the base(s) we feel they would have made.
