defensive base position - inside running path?

2016/7/15 17:31:01

Question
Moved US to New Zealand.  No baseball.  Son now on Softball team.  Coaches here line defensive base positions up inside bases, i.e. playing off of first/second/third is closer toward the pitcher, not inside behind the base closer to outfield.  To me this is not a US vs NZ, Baseball vs Softball issue, but maybe a maturity issue carried over from Tball, etc.  I think outside the runner path would be the preferred position as your line of sight is better relative to base and runner, easier to break forward vs stepping backward.  What is the correct position?

Answer
Many situations come into play here with this question. You made no mention of the age group of children or their skill level. Softball is a game that has so many variables and it is played at a slower pace than is baseball.I typically play my defenders up as well, this is too protect against the bunt and drag bunt as well as the slap. However, batters that "Look" as if they can hit, I adjust defenders accordingly. If you feel that there is a safety issue, with defenders playing up, then approach your coach with an open mind and voice your concerns, All coaches want to win and no coach wants to see a child hurt. Hope I was of some help!
