pinch runners/ re-entering a game

Question
We played a game last night where the oppossing manager in the bottom of the 6th inning with the game tied 10-10 bases loaded, 2 out- wanted to pinch run for the man on second base. He then told us that the man at second base would then come back into the game for the next inning (top of the 7th).  My question is this legal? Doesn't the man on second who was pinch run for, have to sit out an inning before re-entering?

Answer
Hi Bruce,

No, he sub at will and re-enter at will.  If he wanted to he could sub "4" for R2 "5" report it to the umpire and immediately change his mind (forgot "4" has a broken leg or is too hung over for example) and re-enter "5" for "4".  No pitch need to be thrown.  Of course it would count as a sub and re-entry.

The only thing I insist on as an umpire is when you sub, I take that sub, and will only re-enter the subbed for player when he  is ready to take a position.  Most umpires I work with will not take "4 running for 5 and 5 re-entering next inning".  There can be too many problems if someone forgets something. "Coach" let me know when "5" is re-entering next inning.
