Runner called out?

2016/7/15 17:56:31

Question
I'm a coach in a girls 12U B division league. The other night we had a runner called out because she attempted to steal home, ran past the halfway point of the baseline and returned back to third safely. The ump said she was out because she ran past the halfway point of the baseline therefore she is not allowed to return to third. Is this an ASA rule at the 12U level?

Answer
Hello Robyn

There is no such rule for ASA fastpitch softball at any level.

However there is a rule for ASA slow pitch softball (slow pitch ONLY) that reads once a runner crosses a line 20 feet from home plate the runner cannot return to third base (or they will be called out).

If she was attempting to steal I抦 assuming you were playing fastpitch softball so it appears the rule was misapplied by the umpire.
