Since I didnt play much high school ball, can I play college ball? Really?

Question
Hello, this may be a silly one but I need to know if this is even worth trying. I am a 25yr old student, who has just transferred to the first university that has a volleyball team. I played up until my first year of high school when I was diagnosed w/epilepsy. This rendered me unable to play for my high school. I am really good. I'm fast and I'm working on my reach its right at 8'6" block jump and 8' 9" for my spike approach. Should I try out for my university, having not played in high school?

Good morning!
No, playing in high school is not a requirement.
However, you may be on a team with girls who have played up to 7 years of school ball AND up to 7 years of CLUB ball as well!  Or you may not.  There are teams at little colleges (approx 1000 students) here in Virginia that have trouble just getting the ball over the net.  And there are teams from the same size schools that could complete with some D1 programs.

It's good to know that there is a college team for every woman, regardless of her skills.  But the right fit can be really hard to find.  I encourage you to not sacrifice (a) your education or (b) the fun you have in life in order to play college sports.  When I say "fun," I'm not talking about partying & alcohol.  There are some coaches/programs that can suck the fun right out of your life.... punishments, insults, cursing, etc.  At those schools, there is no social life, no b/f's, no party, etc. that can replace the horrible treatment that you'll receive playing on some college teams.

Please contact us again if we can be of any help.  And you can email me personally at [email protected].

Good luck!!

Good afternoon and welcome to www.allexperts.com!

I can see that you want to play.  Here are my questions for you.
* Are you willing to take instruction (a.k.a. orders, demands) from a person who may be younger than you?  less mature than you?
* Are you willing to be fussing at, punished, maybe even cursed?  Daily?
* Are you willing to go through the hundreds of hours of pre-season conditioning?
* Are you willing to be "a kid" again?  w/o much of a social life?  w/o much free time?  taking directions from a coach?  no back talk, no eye rolls, and saying "Yes, Coach Houser".
* Will you be able to take 14, 15, 16 college credits AND play sports?
* Are you willing to be the 12th or 13th or 14th best player on the team?  You may be really good and this not happen, but there's a chance your teammates will be better.

If you say "YES, COACH HOUSER!", then you have to go for it!!  You have no reason not to.
And if you say "YES," but don't, then I think you'll regret it.
You're an adult.  Do what you want.  Do it 100% and have a great time!

Did you notice that I didn't ask you:  "Are you willing to put in all that preparation, then be cut?" b/c being cut would actually make your life "normal".  :)

Is that what you wanted to hear?
