First time running volleyball tryouts

Question
Tom,

This is my first time running high school girl's volleyball tryout. I was told that many girls tryout and that the school will carry a freshman, JV, and Varsity team so I may have to make cuts. I have worked as an assistant coach before at a small school where tryouts were not needed. I was just wondering a few things.

1. What drills would be best to do to get a good view of their skills?

2. How important is conditioning during the tryout process?

3. I was thinking about having tryouts for only 2 days, but I have heard 4 is best due to the rust factor and nerves on day one. Which would you recommend?

4. If cuts must be made, what is the best way to go about doing this?  Posting a roster online or telling people individually?

Thanks and look forward to hearing your advice.

Elliott

Answer
Hello Coach Elliott for the second time.

I'm sitting on a bench in Blowing Rock NC catching up while my wife is shopping.  This is her week for vacation, and I willingly go, as long as I can work some as well.

Do you still need help with tryouts?  If so, please email me at [email protected], and I have found several articles that I'd enjoy sharing with you.  (In fact, if anyone would like some help, I'll share my emails with any of you guys!)

Thank you for being patient.  I'm sorry it took me a few days to get back to you.  Have you visited www.coachhouser.com yet?  I think that you'll really enjoy it!
