Can a team play with all setters?

Question
Is it possible to have a whole team made up of just setters?

Answer
Good afternoon and welcome to www.allexperts.com!  I'm glad that you visited me.

Sure, you can have an entire team of setters. Just like in football, you can have an entire team of quarterbacks or linebackers.  You can have entire team of anything.

But you'd rather have a team where some girls can spike really well, some girls set really well, and some girls pass really well.  If you're in the 6th or 7th grade, many girls are forced to do a little of everything, b/c no one on the team is really good at anything!  haha

But as a girl reaches high school, most players have begun concentrating on one or two of the volleyball specialties.  Just like in football!  When a boy gets to 8th and 9th grades, he will no longer try to be a great runner, a great pass catch, a great blocker, a great quarterback, etc.  He will concentrate on 1 or 2.

So for a volleyball team of 5th graders, there are probably no positions at all because the girls aren't very good at any skill.  But by 8th or 9th, a coach wants to have 1 or 2 setters on the court, 2 or 3 girls who can spike, and 3 or 4 girls who pass really well.  Some of those girls may be able to do 2 or those jobs.  If so, that's fine.  But if not, that's what substitutions are for.

But nearly no high school girl does more than 2 skills really well b/c they never get to practice them!

I hope that answered your question.  If not, please contact me again.  And please visit me at www.coachhouser.com.  I know that you'll like all the smiling faces.
