spiking and jump serves

Question
Hello,

My question relates to spiking and jump serves.  For years, i've been trying to effectively spike and jump serve.  I have the timing down, but whenever i hit the ball, i see little to no spin on it and it doesn't drop as fast as it should.  I can get spin on the ball, but only if i sacrifice most, if not all, of the power (i aim really high and let the ball almost roll off my hand).  On a serve, if i spin the ball on the toss, i can get spin on the serve, but my understanding is that's not the proper way to get spin.

My question is, where on the ball should i make contact (on a spike) to get the downward spin, and where in the air (in front of me, behind me, on top of my head, to the side, etc), where on my hand (heel, palm, wrist, etc) and how should i follow through with my hand?  Are there any drills where i could practice this motion/technique?

Thank you very much in advance.

Answer
Haneef,

Sorry it took me so long to get back to you but I am in the middle of my women's season and I do not have much free time.  I coach at Fordham University and we are doing really well.  Next eweekend will make the difference between making the playoffs or not.  At any rate..........to answer yor question; everything you are doing depends on your arm position.  You probably have your arm to far back when you hit and serve.  You must see the ball when you make contact with it.  If you see the ballwhen you make contact with it and it is still going out then you must snap your wrist.  This will give you the downward momentum that you need to get a kill.

If this did not help or you have any other questions email me at [email protected].

Good luck
Steve
