old bamboo

Question
J,
I inherited three rods, a Hardy Palakona, a Divine, and a custom made rod signed "Bowen".
They appear to be 5 weights.
Should I fish them? Are they worth anything?
J

Answer
Hi Jim,

Depends on the rod models.  The Hardy is likely valuable but the specific Palakona model makes a difference in the value.  The Divine rod was made in the 1892-1935 time period and value would depend on the model as well.  The custom rod would be assessed based on condition.

It will help me estimate the value if you can provide the following for each rod:

1. rod manufacturer, model, number or any decals and inscriptions on the rod.

2. is the rod bamboo, fiberglass or graphite?

3. rod length, number of sections, any short sections or damage?

4. do you have the original bag and tube for each rod?

5. what is your assessment of the rod condition?

As long as there are no obvious signs of damage or cracks in the rods, they can be used.  You may wish to use the Hardy and Divine less often as they may be relatively rare; but they should work fine.

Thanks,  Joe
