Wright & McGill #8599

Question
Hi,

I saw a question earlier on this rod.  I too have a Wright and McGill Granger Double Duty of this vintage.  My rod doesn't say Eagle Claw.  It does say "This Rod equipped with mini-Ferrules. 9ft., Line 10.  There is an "H-9" under a flying Eagle.

I believe the double duty is for mounting either fly reel or other in the reel seat which has cork on both sides.

The reel seat has Wright & McGill Denver Colo. USA
The cork is darkened, but all good. It has 11 guides, not including the tip.  There are 2 areas where the windings are unraveling.

If any of this info might add to you being able to more amply find info regarding this old rod, it would be greatly appreciated.

Also, would you put a value to this Wright and McGill??

Thank you very much for your time and efforts

Ken

Answer
Hi Ken,

I still have not found a lot of information on this rod.  Here's what I think with the addition of your input.

This rod sounds very much like a fly/spin combination rod.  Does the cork/reel seat happen to reverse by "unpluggin" it and turning it around?  It may or may not.

It might be a somewhat newer vintage.  I really don't know for sure yet, but it could be more in the 1970-1980s period.  Mini-ferrules are a feature of the Eagle Claw rods but this one is labelled Granger.  You do have an eagle on the rod, so maybe there is a connection of some sort within the W-M models.

Lacking a specific solution yet for the rod, I would hesitate to value it.  A rough guess would put it in the $40-$80 range for now.

Thanks,  Joe
