Hardy Bros. fishing rod

Question
Hi,

I have a Hardy Bros.Ltd. two piece 8ft. fishing rod. The serial number is E8861. It has a screw type reel fitting. The butt section ferrel is brass and the top section male ferrel is missing. Also some whippings and one ring missing from the bottom section. It has a cork butt. The Hardy Bros. coat of arms is on the base of the butt section. I think it is possibly split cane but not absolutely sure.
I would appreciate any information you could give me about this rod ie.What type of fishing was it made for, age, value and any history.

Many thanks

regards
Alan

Answer
Alan,
According to a Hardy home page at
http://www.hardyandgreyscanada.com/hardy/roddating.php

The serial number on your rod indicates it was made in 1927:
1927 falls between E5888 and E9435.

Take a look at the table associated with that date  for a 2 piece 8 ft, it could be the following model :White Wickham Fairchild.

It is probably bamboo , send pictures to [email protected] and I will confirm it is not Greenhart wood.

It is probably a trout rod , but Lee Wulff fished for salmon with similar rods.

Value ?
I would estimate condition is poor , most would offer $100 but if restored it could bring at least $500.

According to Antique & Collectable Fishing Rods: Identification & Value Guide Homel, Dan. 1997 (2nd edition 2000):the 8 ft model Fairchild (c 1940) ,three piece has an extra tip is  valued at  $100, 250 and $475 for poor, good, excellent condition respectively.
Add 30% for age of book and probably more for the age of the rod.

Take a look at that web page for history
Luck,
Mac
