Winter fishing

Question
Hi, im Connor and i'm 15. I'm just wondering is there any fish out in the winter and how can I catch them? I will be going to mumbles in swansea, fishing off the rocks into the sea. Not on the beach.
And can I use any spinners to catch them? I am a beginner and I love to fish. I just need some info so when I go fishing I dont look stupid.
thanks.

Answer
I am not familiar with the place you talk about. I live in Kentucky in the United States, we do not have any sea's here. There are always fish around, but the temperature is what will determine if they bite and how often.
In winter when the water cools the fish's metabolism slows. This means his stomach is not digesting the food as fast. Fish are cold blooded animals. Meaning that the temperature of their bodies is regulated by the temperature of the water they live in.
During the winter fish will only feed when they can do so without using a lot of energy. So slow moving baits are the key. Baits that sit in one place and move are extremely good especially if you can determine how deep the fish are holding. I know of a method you might try in the sea. It is a freshwater method but could work.
Tie on a small jig to the end of the line. Put a Bobber on about 3 to 5 feet above the jig, and cast it near where you think the fish might be. Just let it sit. The normal wave action will give the jig some movement and attract fish. A small minnow or other live bait barely hooked to the end would be good too. Worm would work as well or a small eel if you have those.
The bobber needs to be big enough to hold all this up.
If the fish do not bite, keep raising the bobber until you start to get bites. Some times you will need to get as deep as 10 feet which means you need to rig a slip bobber or get a longer rod.
Without knowing exactly where you live I can not give you much more.. and probably I could not help you any more since I do not fish the Sea's. If this does not answer your question let me know and I will try to contact someone with more knowledge, but you might try the method I suggest. It will not work if the waves are NOT over a foot high.
