What kind of rod to get for pier fishing.

Question
QUESTION: I have been searching online for awhile getting any information that I can for my investment in my pole.
I just want an all around pole something small enough
to catch small mackerel and strong enough to catch some
small mako or thresher sharks any info will be much appreciated thanks.

ANSWER: Almost any good Medium Heavy Rod will do for ocean fishing for mackerel. Now for Sharks I would want something heavy.
Rods come in 5'6" or longer sizes. I personally like the 6' rods. Since you are pier fishing I would stay away from a fast tip and go with a heavy tip rod.
I really like the Ugly Stik for this kind of application. It is strong and has some spring to it while at the same time being heavy enough to land a big fish from a pier.

QUESTION: Thank you for the advice but something i forgot to cover was what kind of reel to get I want something reliable but I dont have any idea what i should get any info would be very helpful thanks.

Answer
You need something that will take some abuse. I like Ambassedeur reels myself. You need to check if they are Saltwater proofed.. IF NOT you need to soak them in sweet water after using them on a Saltwater Pier. I like the Ambassedeur 5500 and 6000. Each has a baitrunner feature that allows you to lay the rod down, without having a large fish run off with it. Line will peel out until you set the drag and the hook. Works great for live bait.
