GA7030

Question
Goodwin Granger Rods
Goodwin Granger Rods
Hello Joe,
I have an Goodwin Granger GA 7030 in mint condition with two tips (7' length 3 oz weight).  The rod is pre-Wright McGill.  Reel seat is labeled Pat App 12 1938 - Pat No 2114107 - Made By Goodwin Granger Company Denver with rod tube and sock. The rod was made custom for Walter S. Reilly of Denver. I also have a spinning rod in the same mint condition GS 6040 (6' length and 4 oz weight). I am interested in selling them and am seeking your recommendations.
Thanks,
Boyd Jensen

Answer
Hi Boyd,

This is the Aristocrat model (if I am not mistaken) and if it is is truly in Mint condition, it is a very good find.  They look great, but an in person inspection is needed to establish condition.  Value on this fly rod would probably be in the $1,100-$1,500 range. As for the spinning rod, I would guess value to be in the $300-$500 range in Mint condition.  Both could easily be worth more.

What you need to do is find, within a reasonable distance of your location, an experienced appraiser with expertise in rare vintage fishing rods.  I suggest you take the rod to be inspected and appraised...not mail it...and wait while the appraisal is done.  Get a written appraisal and then search for a good auction house with a good reputation for handling rare vintage rods...this may or may not be the same place.

You can consign the rod to the auction house (this will mean a fairly hefty commission) or try to sell it yourself.  The written appraisal will help you sell the rod.

You can also search for some of the classic bamboo rod discussion forums that are online and post some messages about the rods and the appraisals you receive.  These boards are frequented by folks who prefer and collect rare vintage rods like these.  You may sell it quickly or you may not...but in the present economy, I assure you there are those with the funds to grab up a pair of nice rods like these two.

Do your homework on both the appraiser and any potential seller and expect to pay a fair price for the work he or she does.

Thanks,  Joe
