Hi Mac,

I received a bamboo fly rod from a friend whose husband passed away and would like to know the value:

Heddon #10 written diagonally across the butt section bamboo
silver-nickel reel seat with "Pat." engraved in it but no numbers present
Rod length: 9'
Butt ferrule length:  2"
Butt section length: 36-1/2"
Mid section length:  36 5/8"
Tip #1:  34"
Tip #2:  36-1/4"

I've attached one photo, but will email you a couple more...

Thanks in advance for your help,

Chad

Answer
Chad,
You have a Heddon which is a decent rod.
The #10 was first released in 1934. Yours was made before 1939 , when they put more information in black script on the butt section ( ferrule size and line weight). You can confirm that information in
Bamboo Rod Restoration Handbook   by Michael Sinclair

The condition is not excellent because of the broken tip. I can't say if it is poor or good from the pictures. If it is loosing finish or thread it is poor.

Price Book:
Antique & Collectible  Fishing Rods: Identification & Value Guide by Homel, Dan. 1997 (2nd edition 2000) add about 30% for age of book.

Homel gives the value for the 9 foot model #10 Heddon trout fly rod, 3 sections ,   with an extra tip valued at  $20, 60 and $125 for poor, good, excellent condition respectively. You could add 30% due to age of book. If presented properly you could get more.
