Hi, I got this as a gift refendu rod for fly fishing, is 9 feet long and has a natural cork grip, I would like to know how many more possible news about this tool and go back to the era of costruzionem, can you help? grazie Carlo

Answer
Carlo,
No, but I have heard of a South Bend 336 9' Double Built.
South Bend sold Cross Double Built rods after buying Cross Rod Co. which included the services of a great rod maker, Wes Jordon. The Double Built are the higher quality and priced rods from South Bend, meant to compete with Heddon, Thomas and Edwards.

The label / logo on your rod was first used in 1926, double built rods were no longer made after 1946. If you rod has a thumb rest - the Comficient it as made after 1939.

Some books :
Price Book:
Antique & Collectible  Fishing Rods: Identification & Value Guide by Homel, Dan. 1997 (2nd edition 2000) add about 30% for age of book.
Bamboo Rod Restoration Handbook   by Michael Sinclair
Classic & Antique Fly-Fishing Tackle: A Guide for Collectors & Anglers by A.J. Campbell

Homel gives the South Bend 9' Cross Double Built Model 266 (close to your model) fly rod with an extra tip, 3 sections the  value of  $40, 100, and $185 for poor, good, and excellent condition respectively.

The picture of your rod indicates a loss of finish and is probably in poor condition.

Luck,
Mac
