Heddon Rod Line Weight Guide: Decoding Vintage Markings

Question
i have two Heddon rods that belonged to my wife's grandfather.  An 8 1/2 foot Thorobred #55 Trout marked E-HEH and another, a 7 1/2 Deluxe #70 Trout marked D-HDH.  Both are in very good condition and apparently were fished very little.  Are you able to tell me from these markings what weight line these were meant for?

Answer
Tom,
You have a great last name , as rivers go.
E-HEH is equivalent  to modern AFTMA # 5 weight.
D-HDH - is 6
assuming your rods are fly rods.
You can double check with AFTMA
My experience with these vintage rods is the modern lines will work well but a little short if you want to shoot line.
Modern lines are slightly larger in diameter, I often put 1 size bigger  when restoring a rod thta is going to be fished.
luck,
Mac
