have  found a  square steel rod  just want to see how  old it is

Steel rods were the low cost alternative to bamboo rods. They date from before 1900 thru the 1940s. They were then replaced by fiberglass as the low cost material of choice. Several makers produced square rods, American Fork & Hoe Company from Ohio was one of them. If there is no marking on the reel seat, it will be difficult to identify.
