Help identify a saltwater fish

2016/7/15 10:24:10

Question
My son caught a small fish in a net in the Atlantic surf near Virginia Beach, VA. It was very long and skinny, about 5" long, with a long snout, what looked to be sharp teeth. It was tannish grey with darker spots/stripes and greenish blue all around it's eyes. I can send a picture, would like to know what kind of fish it was.

thanks- JMO

Answer
Hi Mike;

Sounds like a garr.  Quite common, but not generally caught by hook and line since even the full grown adults do not get much more than 10 or 12 inches long.  Use the PC to search for "garr" and chances are you will find that is what you caught.  Let me know how you made out.
