Saltwater Mussels & Freshwater: Can They Survive?

Saltwater mussels cannot live in freshwater. They require a saltwater environment with a salinity of at least 30 parts per thousand (ppt) to survive. In freshwater, their body fluids would become too dilute, causing them to lose essential ions and electrolytes, and eventually leading to death.
