lie angel

Question
QUESTION: I am 5'6" and was fitted for 2* upright. Is this normal and what does it say about my swing?

ANSWER: Don,

I am assuming two things Don. Yes, I know what happens when I assume.

1) the clubs are standard length
2) You slice/ fade the ball.

Lets start with #1
if clubs are standard length you are having to make address position adjustment that may prevent you from squaring up at impact. Most OEM fitters automatically go to lie angle to help this problem. When you come from the back swing possibly "over the top" you are turning more left to get to the impact position and try and make the ball go less right. When you do this you toe the ball. Again lie angle is in question and adjusted.

If club length was adjusted then I would say you have one upright swing plane.

#2
If you slice some fitters will go more upright to point the club left. again the wrong Idea. Go with a more flexible shaft,  assuming club length in correct.

In any case
fit to length first, that way you are in the proper address position to start, then lie angle, then flex and then you can work on "quirks" after for better golf.

If have any more questions you can ask them here or go to www.mcgolf.net and ask me there.

Thanks again

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: Jim,

Exactly #1. When I was fitted they told me that I close the cluface on impact and that is why I usually pull/hook.
I took a lesson a few years ago and the pro encouraged me to steepen the swing plane and turn left to "fix" my slice. That does work but I really have problems with the pull hook if my timing is off. Anyway, I'm going to try the upright clubs and see what happens.

Answer
Don,
Thanks for the positive input.

I would recommend going to the fitter or another fitter that will check for the correct length. When this is found your swing plane does not need to modify to fit the club. The club should be made to minimize the negative parts of the swing and help increase the positive parts of the swing.

Thanks Again
Jim
