Stiff versus Regular

Question
I am 60 years old, 6'3" and play to a 8-10 handicap.  Time for a new driver.  Just found out my swing speed was 103 mph.  Always used a regular shaft and 10.5 degree, but hit them high.  Should I go to stiff at 9 degrees?  Also have a slight outside in swing for which I'm trying to work out but struggling.  Something tells me all this is related.

Answer
Bob,
First and foremost, a driver fitting from a certified or qualified club fitter is a must. That 8-10 handicap might just drop a stroke or two.

Second, congrats on the 103 swing speed, at 60 years young that's pretty darn good.

Third high is a relative term, at 103 the ball should be landing on or past the 250 mark. If not then you very well may be hitting to high.

Swinging at 103 mph you on the cusp of what many shaft makers deem a stiff flex. Meaning, if you are smooth then a regular flex will work fine however if you are aggressive then get the stiff shaft. If your regular shaft club is missing the mark short then a "R" flex 9 degree might be the trick.

There are plenty of variables such as shaft weight, shaft profile, grip size and style, loft etc. So, I would recommend a fitting, spend a little money up front to prevent guessing at a potential $300 plus purchase.

If you have anything else please let me know
