clubhead speed vs launch angle vs distance

Question
I recently got fitted for new clubs and had club head speed measured. My 6-iron came in at 87 mph. On the course, I tend to hit a 6-iron about 155 to 160 yds, which seems a bit less than i would expect for that club head speed. I also notice that I hit the ball high--almost looks like a 7.5 or 8-iron. I assume that if I can hit with a lower trajectory, I'll increase distance, allowing me to hit shorter clubs for better accuracy. What are your thoughts? Am I coming in too steep? Perhaps releasing my wrists too soon, thereby adding loft to the club? Or, is that distance in line with my club head speed? Also, would it be beneficial if I knew ball speed as it leaves the club face, to make sure that I'm maximizing club head speed at impact? I hit my drive between 265 and 290 yds. I have a 6.5 index.
Thanks so much!

Answer
Sounds like you hit the ball very much like myself, distance wise and trajectory wise. Your swing speed seems to be right. Hitting your 6-iron 155 to 160 seems about right as well. It does depend on the loft of the club. Your irons might be "weaker" (higher lofts) than standard thus you'll hit the ball a little higher and shorter.

Do you take a healthy divot with your 6-iron? If not, you might be like me and basically sweep the ball off the turf. You could try playing the ball back a few more inches in your stance (towards the middle of your stance).

If you're hitting your irons with good consistency, I wouldn't worry about how far you hit them. The name of the game is consistency and low scores, not how far you can hit each club.

I myself play with a set of irons that are all the same weight and same length. They're all the same length as a standard 7 iron (my favourite club). Thus, they all feel the same and have the same swing plane. I don't notice a significant difference in distances between these clubs and my old standard set. A slightly longer shaft (3-iron compared to 9-iron) doesn't make a huge difference in clubhead speed. The major factor in determining distance with an iron is the iron
s loft. Your swing speed with a 9-iron and 3-iron won't differ much.

You can take a look at them from my site:
