In the general history of golf courses. Link style courses in Scotland were actually common areas. The towns people share the area to practice archery or dry clothes etc. Yardage markers as an item were not used.
A yardage marker is a modern golf course accessory. The first patent applied was completed in 1976. However there are speculations that yardage markers were used as early as the nineteen teens.
