RIGHT

Question
I have a slight problem with going right!!  Every shot goes right.  I have been trying to pull through with my left arm and bring my club around me to keep my shoulders square.  I have been told i need to keep my right elbow tucked in because i stick mine out...does that make a difference?  I also always aim left cause I go right...should I be doing that? Thanks.

Answer
Good morning Holly,  Aim left until you get time to work this out, that is fine.
Hitting right of the target is very common and sometimes it seems the more you try not to the more it happens. Here are 3 answers, try them and if none of these work get back to me.

If your divots go to the left because of that flying elbow then you are cutting across the ball, think of a ping pong paddle and ball, cutting across the ball imparts spin which leads to the slice. Your elbow doesn't stay up by itself, you may be lifting the club with it on the take away. Push back with your left and use your shoulders more, keep the right arm out of the backswing, a drill is to put a ballon or soccerball size pillow between your elbows and learn to swing without dropping it.  Your right arm should come into the ball in a rock skipping motion.

If your divots are straight but the ball goes right, it depends how it is going right, if it is going straight right, you may be hitting it off the toe of the club. Check for grass stains on your club to see where you are contacting the ball then keep your weight forward on the balls of your feet to keep you up there, if that doesn't work you might try standing closer, just be sure to stay off your heels.

If it is curving to the right then you have an open face at impact. Ironically this actually comes from trying to hit it straight by attempting to have the face square at impact, start with a looser grip and allow your hands to rotate through the striking area. The clubface should never travel square to the line, it has to roll continously. It opens on the way back and closes on the way through, it is natural. The timing of the roll is in your grip, if you have a loose neutral grip it will rotate just fine. I can't see your grip but you want the 2 "V"s formed by your thumb and each hand pointing to your right collar bone. If you have a logo on your glove you should be able to just see it.
Start with a seven iron on a tee and hit some lazy looking 3/4 shots letting your hands rotate loosely then work into a full swing on the ground and use other clubs, it is the same for each club. If you develope a hook, good for you, now you need to adjust your grip and start aiming at the hole. You will get quite a bit more distance now because you will be driving the ball forward rather than slipping off the side of it or getting under it, we want to hit the BACK of the ball not under it. Again think of ping pong or tennis, drive the ball over the net. Learn to trust the loose grip it is a key to good golf.  Write back if you need any more help and have an awesome day.
