First time, should I ski or snowboard?

2016/7/22 11:05:44

Question
I'm going on a ski trip in a couple days for spring break (totally last minute for me so I've had no time to really prepare) and I was wondering which is easier (and more fun) for me to learn the first time? I'm female, 21, 5'8" and am about 190lbs. Though I am overweight, I'm not in awful physical condition. My legs are in good shape (calves more so than thighs), but I have weak arms (if that makes a difference). I plan on taking a lesson for whichever one I choose... I just don't know which one would be the best for me. Any tips you have will be greatly appreciated! Thanks! :)

Answer
Hi and thanks for the question.

Snowboarding is easy if you've a background in surfing &/or skateboading.

It is easier to get up and going on skis if you're going for a short time. You have a wider base of support making it easier to balance and turn.

If you have weaker upperbody - snowboading will get very tiring as you have to push yourself up with your arms every few minutes [yes that often. You need more flexability with snowboarding or it can get very difficult to stand up.

Skiing on the otherhand still requires balance and leg strength.  If yoiu have poor balance - your thighs will get tired fast. Remember - if your thighs are "burning" - your leaning too far back - correct it and the burn will dissappear.

Personally i suggest skiing - you will be more mobile in a shorter period of time - and if going with friends this will be most important.

The only other consieration will be what everyone else is doing and how many others are going to be learning with you? If you're the only beginner - go the skis on this trip.

Have a great time - but dress appropriately
or you'll freeze and then nothing you do will be fun!!
