New to instructing

2016/7/22 11:06:22

Question
I am going to be working in the Australian ski fields this winter and am just wondering if you can let me in on what to expect.  I have never instructed skiing before so this is something new.

Cheers
Mitch

Answer
hi and thanks for the question, sorry about the delay, have been away for uni.

you dont indicate if you are Australian or visiting from overseas...

the winters here are short in comparison to other countries, yet they can feel like they are dragging on forever toward the end.

payrate in your first season is that of a 1st year apprentice - minimal [$12-14/hr] and you are paid pro-rata [ie: work 5 hours get paid for 5 hours]

many find it too difficult, especially if they've arrived without some savings, so bar/restaurant experience will be helpful to pick up some extra work.

depending where you go will depend on where you want to live - also too if you have a car.

many like to live away from the resort - as a means to get away from the paying guests. others like to live on mountain.

you didnt indicate where you were going? which resort?
if you let me know i can give you more specific info.

I am assuming you have applied for the job and been accepted for the "interview" process? is this the case?
would you like info for this as well?
