Ski hardware question

Question
Question:  I have been researching the Volkl AC3 as a versatile ski.  I ski one ski all year and don't like to change or even carry additional equipment.  I am an advanced skier who likes steep groomed runs, but need to cut through bumps now and again to get where I want to be.  I enjoy both quick edge to edge turns and wider GS turns; it's just fun to mix it up.  I don't ski trees regularly.  I am 5' 11" 150lbs and I want a ski which can accommodate above and remain stable at high speeds.  Mainly ski Mammoth, CA and Utah powder now and again.  The AC3 seems to be a good product to accomplish this but I am unsure about length, 170 or 177.  What do you recommend?

Thank you,

Bruce Newsom

Answer
Bruce, in general, 177 is within the length zone for your height... on the upper limit, but still in the zone. The 170 you will notice getting squirrley at high speed on groom/hardpack, and the 177 should be a little more stable,in general.

However, and I always say this, do not buy a particular ski until you actually spend a day skiing on it. Unless it is the deal of a lifetime, like a brand new AC3 for $150 for a closeout, and you can gamble the $150.

Find who has a demo program, and ski both sizes in the same day. That is the best way. Usually they will credit the $30 or so to the purchase price. But once you know for sure the length/model you can shop www.froogle.com and get the best price, well often $200-300 below what a ski shop quotes you.

So thats the best strategy. Good luck, TK
