How to pick a size and type?

Question
I have never been skiing but I have always- daily been active in activites like mt biking, I live up north now and cant stand to stay indoors for 6 months.  I want to go skiing where I went local trail riding, lots of turns little ups & downs and some slightly flat surface, I may or may not make it to the big skii slopes (probably will). Where do I start? I dont know what ski size or type I should get...and what shoe? I am 5"5 and wear a 8.5 shoe normally....help!

Answer
hi and thanks for the question.

You dont say if you're planning to go out skiing "off piste" or outside a ski resort. If that is the case - you will need to consider cross-country or back country equipment as that will allow you to walk uphill.  Skis are as a general rule very slippery, hence they slide. So to go uphill you need skis with either scales or skins that you put on and remove as needed.  Is the area your planning to go out in the scrub [err bush?] if so you need very specific equipment so you dont sink too deep and get stuck.  And on that note you will need to go with someone &/or ensure you have communication equipment that will work out there.

If on the otherhand you are going to a ski resort - may i suggest you rent your equipment the first time you go. There are so many variables with skiing - and your learning curve is a large part of it. With your athletic background you will possibly progress quickly in either alpin/downhill skiing as well as cross country/telemark skiing.

General rule of thumb-
skis go up to anywhere between you chin and eyebrow
boots are a specific fit - there is no compromise here.

If you could be more specific about where you will be skiing - i will then give you more specific information. otherwise this email could go for days!!

Are you going to be skiing at a resort?
are you wanting to do traditional downhill skiing?
or are you planning more self guided skiing off piste?
how hilly is the area?
[i will give you a uide as to the equipment you will need to take for a day like this as well]
