How do the pro wrestlers take it?

Question
How do you get used to all the punishment a wrestler takes in the ring? Like when BIG SHOW with All his massive weight slow-walks on you?... or when Daniel Bryan stands on your face with both his feet? I have heard some people argue that wrestling is all fake---but how can punishment like this be faked? Can a human being stand or walk on you and you not feel the crushing weight? When a guy is hurled out of the ring and smashes into the Concrete floor, how can that be faked? In Hockey, a guy's face is sometimes hurled even into the edge-on glass, and no one wonders if it is fake... The wrestlers clearly take incredible punishment in their matches, how can anyone describe it as fake?...

Answer
Hi Melvin.  Thanks for the question.

The easiest way to answer is that wrestlers are trained professionals, and there is a certain way to do all the moves without actually getting hurt.  That's not to say some moves don't hurt, but like I said, there is just a certain way to do all the moves.  Wrestlers can train for months, sometimes even years at pro wrestling schools, learning to be a pro wrestler.

For instance, watch a how a wrestler falls on his back.  The legs, arms, and elbows are all up, so the wrestlers should land flat on his back.  If a wrestler tried to break the fall with his arms, hands, or elbow, something would most likely get broken.  After falling on your back enough, you basically build up a pain tolerance, so it doesn't really hurt them at all.

How does a wrestler throw a punch and not break his fingers or hand?  It's basically a soft fist, meaning you clench your hand into a fist, but don't apply any pressure.  So when one wrestler punches another in the face, he's hitting him with a soft fist, and the other wrestler just "sells" the punch, basically meaning acting like he's been hit really hard.

Something such as a chairshot can't really be faked, because any wrestler will tell you it hurts, but it's just done a certain way.

The difference between a wrestler and hockey player is pretty simple.  Wrestlers are trained how to do the moves without getting hurt, and since most matches are pretty scripted out, the wrestlers know what's coming and how to prepare for it.  A hockey player doesn't necessarily know what is coming, and can't prepare himself.

Thanks again for the question.  Let me know if you have anything else.

Have a great day!

Dave
