Downhill Skiing Rules

Here are several downhill skiing rules. You have waited patiently through the summer months. Ski season is fast approaching and you are ready to go on vacation. Before you go, it's important to know the rules of downhill skiing. Understanding these regulation and safety procedures will help you prevent injury to yourself and others. Following these rules will enable you to have a safe an enjoyable downhill ski experience.

  1. Take a mental note of any posted warnings or signs. This is one of the seven parts of the National Ski Area Association's "code of responsibility". If a sign states that a trail is closed, you should stay out of the area. These warnings can indicate anything from avalanches to downed trees across the trail.
  2. Follow the ski resort's policy. Hotel's generally follow the guide set by the National Ski Association. However, they may have their own set of rules and regulations. Not adhering to these guidelines can result in a termination of your skiing privileges.
  3. Always wear a helmet when skiing. It's especially important that children and young adults wear a helmet as they are the most likely to get injured. Wearing protective head gear will help you to prevent serious injury to your head.
  4. Watch where you stop. Don't stop where you can't be seen by those coming down the slope from above you. It's a good idea to avoid stopping in the middle of the slope. If you are blocking part of a trail, you could become a potential hazard to other skiers.
  5. Take a couple of skiing courses if you are a beginner. Taking beginner courses will help you learn how to ski correctly. These classes will also teach you important safety rules and any regulations that you aren't aware of. There are certain techniques that are practices regarding lifts. Learning these will enable you to get on and off safely. These courses teach you how to ski downhill.
